Acabei de receber esse erro no Arch Linux. hp-setup tem funcionado bem até agora. Não entendo a mensagem de erro.

Depois de ver esse erro, reinstalei o hplip (que é o pacote que possui o arquivo hp-setup).
pacman -Qo /usr/share/hplip/setup.py
/usr/share/hplip/setup.py is owned by hplip 3.17.11-1
Isso não resolveu o problema.
O erro ocorre sem opção de linha de comando (que é padrão para o modo GUI) ou com a --gui
opção. No entanto, com a --interactive
opção (que é um modo somente texto), não recebo o erro.
Outro computador Arch com uma configuração idêntica (no que diz respeito aos pacotes e configurações instalados) não apresenta o erro (mesmo com o modo GUI).

A solução foi simples:
e de fato precisava ser instalado.
O relatório do
pacman -Qi hplip
qual indicou:foi enganador. Quando corri
pacman -Qi python-gobject
, descobri que não estava realmente instalado. Instalá-lo resolveu o problema.
